NICEVILLE, Fla. In Louisiana's first nine years of Sun Belt Conference membership, the Ragin' Cajun golf team finished in the league's top three eight times including two conference championships.

Over the past two years, the Cajuns have finished seventh in the 10-team field, and the goal for the squad and coach Bob Bass is to better that mark beginning today at the Sun Belt's Golf Championships.

The league's 10 men's and women's squads (the Cajuns do not play women's golf and Florida International does not play men's golf) begin three rounds of play today at the Bluewater Bay Resort.

The winner earns the league's automatic bid into NCAA regional play.

The tournament is being held at Bluewater Bay for the third straight year, and the men's squad will play the Lake and Marsh courses at a combined 6,857 yards the same courses as last year when North Texas won the title by 10 strokes over runner-up Denver.

In Louisiana's most recent tournament, the Cajuns finished 10th of 18 teams at the Arkansas State Indian Classic. The Cajuns finished behind Arkansas-Little Rock (587) and North Texas (588) with a 595 score, ahead of league foes Middle Tennessee (599) and host ASU (613).
