  4. UL Basketball Back to Blackham, 1950-1985, 2005

Not long after Blackham Coliseum opened in 1950, opposing basketball coaches came to view a game against the University of Louisiana as their most challenging road trip of the season.

Even lofty Marquette, one of the most storied programs in the country, found the facility to be claustrophobic and menacing, losing at Blackham one year before the Cajuns left to move into the Cajundome to begin the 1985-86 season.

The 2005-06 Cajuns will host Charlotte on Saturday night in Blackham as repairs continue on the hurricane-damaged Cajundome. It will be the first game that counts in the old facility since 1985.

Beryl Shipley, who coached at UL from 1957 to 1973, remembers those Blackham days well.

"We were getting tremendous community support, and the student body in those days was tremendous," he said.

The crowds even made it to the games before the team, former player Dwight "Bo" Lamar said.

  5. UL Basketball UL game 'nostalgic'

Fans feel good to be at Blackham

Marcus Constantine was young, but he remembers when Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns played basketball in Blackham Coliseum.

"I was real young, in elementary school," Constantine said. "I recall Karl Malone of Louisiana Tech coming in here and playing. It brings back a lot of memories."

UL played a regular season game in Blackham for the first time in 20 years Saturday night, falling to Charlotte by a 67-62 score before 3,209 fans in a game moved from the Cajundome while that facility repairs damage from Hurricane Rita.

You're going to be singing a different tune when they start beating up the Sun Belt again. Patience is a virtue. Didn't you learn anything from the football team?

Nah, he won't. He always sings the same mournful dirge. Pity.

  13. a) This year at Blackham. 654 more fans attended the 4 games.

When you consider (going into games) the Cajuns worst pre-conference record last year was better than the best pre-conference record this year (something that usually keeps fans away)

And the fact that there was no beer at Blackham . . .

I think the attendance was great.
