    Default Tulane to Big 12??

"The source said that Tulane would become a viable option for the Big 12 if it were to grab four schools to beef up the membership to 12, in a situation where BYU decides it doesn't want to leave its football independence or its new tie to the WCC in all other sports. Tulane is interesting to the Big 12 because of its location in New Orleans and in a state, Louisiana, where the Big 12 is absent, as well as the school's renewed commitment to sports and facilities after Hurricane Katrina.

A source with knowledge of Tulane's situation told ESPN.com that the Green Wave have privately been making overtures to the Big East and Big 12 about possible membership but didn't want to upset Conference USA as that league looks to form a partnership with the Mountain West. "

Tulane is awful in football and basketball. It brings a good market but New Orleans doesn't care about Tulane. I don't see it happening

That might shoot their attendance up to 6k per game.

The "Not so Big 12", deserves a "C'Mon Man"! They could go after S.Miss and get the same market and a bigger commitment from administration. Hey Big 12, Sun Belt teams compete and beat teams in your conference, not C-USA.

It could make sense for a few reasons.

    1. The Big 12 desperately needs to add schools. But I doubt that the texas schools will want to add Texas schools like TCU, Houston, and SMU. UT, Baylor, and Tech rely heavily on donors and support from Houston and Dallas. It's in their best interest to keep schools from the Houston and Dallas metro areas from getting "big" because they would probably lose part of their fan base to these local schools. This doesn't leave many options for the Big 12.

    2. As we all know it's all about TV revenue. And theoretically the bigger the media market the more TV revenue you can generate. Tulane is in a fairly large Media market without Big 12 exposure.

    3. If Big 12 schools are playing football in the Superdome Tulane will get big crowds. Same with Basketball which can play big conference games at the first class New Orleans Arena.

As unjust as it is I don't think it's that crazy. It would be a desperate move by the Big 12 but the Big 12 is getting pretty close to desperation mode.

Interesting that academics here appear to be fueling athletics. Tulane is one of only two AAU schools in the BCS division that is not in a BCS conference.

I don't think Tulane will make the cut, but it would almost be worth it just to hear the collective groans coming out of Baton Rouge.

Tulane meets one criteria, academics. They can't deliver a market that is owned by LSU. Their total athletic budget isn't close. It makes for good conversation, but this is nothing more then an exchange of phones calls with the Big 12. There is a lot of this going on behind the schenes right now.

What I am about to type applies to UL and Tulane when it comes to current budgets and getting in to larger conferences . . .

The funny thing about being under budget to get in is . . .as soon as you're in, you're over.
