Thread: Don Landry works to preserve Louisiana's prep and collegiate boxing history

  1. Default Don Landry works to preserve Louisiana's prep and collegiate boxing history

By happenstance, a simple phone call to Don Landry about one subject -- his 13 years as the head basketball coach at Nicholls State -- shifted in a completely different direction with the customary, parting question: "What are you doing these days?"

Having just returned from the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame ceremonies in Natchitoches where his star former player Larry Wilson was inducted, Landry's short-term plans include a trek to Florida to celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife Lucille before returning to Baton Rouge where he will assume his ongoing venture as a "hunter and gatherer".

A self-professed, "lousy, former, 90-pound boxer," Landry has spent the past few years trying to document and rekindle interest in a largely undocumented sport which many of us never knew even existed -- high school and collegiate boxing, a competition that flourished in this state from 1931 to '58.

he could write a whole chapter of the boxing teams from scott high school of the late '40's and early '50's. one of those teams in the '50's won the national championship in philadelphia. names like coach luther perrin, former football star at sli; joe bergeron, and others.

We have a banner from a state championship boxing team in Loreauville, I think from 1958. I've always heard stories from people and would love to see some of his research.
