What are schools that don't have sports to cut going to do to address their own shortfalls?

I have no idea under current circumstances.

Depending on the outcry the NCAA may be persuaded to lower the minimum (supported sports) requirements.

I think I got it. Maybe they can not only require masks for attendance of all sporting events, but could require that those masks are ones with University protected trademark insignia on them that must be purchased from the University. How can anyone not want to participate in a mask fundraiser.

Requiring 16 sports, seems like an arbitrary number. For the next 2 -3 years each conference should be able to decide minimum sports requirements, 10 or 12 whatever makes sense. Will be different in different parts of the country. Let's be realistic, with the pandemic and economy, adjustments should and can be made. It's not popular but make needed reductions now to keep retained programs strongly supported.

The article says Stanford was stuggling pre-pandemic.

They sponsor 36 sports overall. The ones being cut are men's and women's fencing, field hockey, lightweight rowing, men's rowing, co-ed and women's sailing, squash, synchronized swimming, men's volleyball and wrestling after the 2020-21 academic year.

"Lightweight rowing"? WTF; as opposed to heavyweight or bantom weight or welter weight rowing? Just sounds like affluent people won't have anybody to bribe to get their kids into an elite school via BS athletic programs.

The AD is probably happy about this.

When this began the G5's petitioned the NCAA for a temporary lowering of minimum sports required. It was turned down.

Its true, they were turned down. At the time it was believed the pandemic would die down in the summer. However evidence is mounting the pandemic will be more long lasting than first believed, so many unknowns about how the virus is mutating, etc. Massive revenue streams are at risk for P5 & G5 members. Not trying to be dismissive of how hard all the athletes work year round. Just being realistic about the situation, the uncertainty of our economy (local and national) we're facing the next couple years. Hanging on to a couple extra minor non-revenue sports is the least of our worries. Hopefully the NCAA will wake up to the current reality and get off its institutional arrogance trip. First rule of if you're digging yourself into a hole- stop digging.

The Ivy League has announced the shutdown of all fall sports. That pebble just got dropped in the pond.

"When this began" being the operative phrase.

Then again the NCAA banned Indian names while being headquartered in INDIANapolis.
