NMSU & UTEP are about in absolutely the worst place in America to be part of a conference. Lacking TV 👁's and bad geography. Nobody needs them and nobody should be concerned about them.

I think there is enough CUSA schools and SBC schools that are considering this more seriously now than five years ago. If Louisiana Tech wants to hold out for something else, good luck to them.

El Aye Tech probably thinks they can always run back to the WAC.

I can't find it now but one writer thinks half the MAC is headed back to FCS. Maction killed that conference.

For any of us that feel the Cajuns belong in the AAC we need to take a step back and look at the head to head record USM holds over their head in football (historically)...good grief I'd be butt hurt.

This article makes too much sense...it's coming.

The reporter calls it right. The CUSA big market strategy failed miserably almost from the very beginning of the 2012-14 realignment period. They know it, everyone knows it. As much as anyone, USM got the shaft during the last round of conf realignment. Perhaps USM and UAB as original CUSA members have the stroke to lead the conversation towards an alignment more to their choosing this next time around.

CUSA has failed its universities. Thanks to Mississippi Today and Rick Cleveland for pointing it out in a way that even the Tech athletic director should be able to understand. Tom Petty's level of butthurt indicates that he already knows that Tech's forty year quest for "separation" has resulted in failure. This is Tech's Vietnam. It is a quagmire. Millions spent only to end up behind Louisiana.

Ark state, Louisiana, USM, and tech should all be in the same conference as they have historical rivalries and we hate each other. Travel for fans is much more doable with these schools.

Rick Cleveland is one of the most respected sports writers in the South. Very credible.

Unfortunately, what Mr. Cleveland says makes WAAAAAY too much sense.

    Hope I'm wrong...

This is a well timed article in response to LA Tech's foolish AD. It would be helpful to put together a time and cost savings analysis per sport per year. The regional conference merger seems to benefit everyone. The student athletes will gain more class time, athletic departments save money, and fans get more involvement.

I thought we had some rough travel when we go to Boone. His description of that basketball trip for the Golden Eagles made me tired just reading it. Foolish for that type of expense to continue In today's environment.

The App/Coastal trip is a tough one. Fly to Charlotte (BR has a direct flight), bus two hours to Boone. Then you have a choice of going back to Charlotte and catching a puddle jumper to Myrtle Beach, or you can just bus the 5.5 hours.

But basketball travel is CUSA has to be a real bee-yotch.

The article makes tons of sense for most of the group he listed. it also leaves issues for others. there will always be some issues with whatever schools become the new boarder. the major question is at what point do these presidents decide they are willing to move on to better themselves, and not be concerned if others are hurt from it. this article will have several schools being left out in the cold. the only way most central teams will truly save, is to form a more central based league. plus the central group has more history. 5 texas schools and nmsu is no saving for most central teams.

They have a history of getting left out waiting for a better opportunity

Said it before, I'll say it again. What does The Ruston-Grambling-Lincoln Parish metroplex have to offer the world other than maybe a clean bathroom between Jackson and Shreveport? Tech wasn't a good fit for the CUSA model.

In that respect, they got the perfect AD. He comes from "rest area" colleges...NSU and McNeese.
