We were 2-2 in the conference tourney in 2006, for a little context.

I've had my share of scotch since 2006. Memory certainly does seem to romanticize things. Those numbers are sobering, no pun intended. Guess it speaks to how pampered we've become with this staff and this program. We've come a long way in 12 years Brian...

Yup. And one of those wins was the elimination of South Alabama from the conference tournament (where they went 1-2) ... the team we were competing with for an at-large bid. The Cajuns finished 2.5 games ahead of South Alabama in conference record (21-7 vs. 18-9), in addition to eliminating the Jags from the conference tournament. Head-to-head was a draw (2-2).

What I did not know at the time (because the official selection time RPI was not published until some time after the selections) ... is that the RPI ranking differential between the Cajuns and Jaguars widened to 17 spots (#38 vs. #55) by selection time. South Alabama added a road game at #9 RPI Florida State between the end of the regular season and the conference tournament. South Alabama had a bye that last conference weekend and had ten days between their last conference game and the first day of the conference tournament. Coach Steve Kitrell threw ace PJ Walters an incredible number of pitches (147), throwing all 11 innings of the 7-2 win over the Seminoles (scoring five unearned in the T11th). This was after Walters threw 8 innings four days prior in a Friday conference game. This win also provided RPI bonus points (non-conference road win vs top 25 Base RPI team). The selection committee chose to favor what became a 17 spot difference in RPI ranking, despite the other metrics in the Cajuns' favor ... including a considerably better finish in the conference regular season and conference tournament.

BTW, South Alabama was a paltry 2-7 vs. the RPI Top 25, 6-12 vs. the RPI Top 50, and 17-18 vs. the RPI Top 100. They did have the NC RPI advantage (much thanks to that Florida State game).

Walters somehow avoided elbow, or shoulder surgery. He had a decent pro career for a righty who never lit up the radar gun.
