Bottom line we don't have much in soccer, track and field, golf, and tennis most years. Don't know if it's the coaches we hire, or the resources we give them.

Probably a bit of both. I know the "major" sports require the lion's share of resources, but it's a shame that the once-proud t&f program has languished so badly.

Express, T&F has produced more team top 20 national finishes than any other sport and more All-American individual performers than all other UL sports combined. We have not been good from time to time, we were extremely good on a consistant basis for over 40 years under several coaches.

That ended with the death of Charles Lancon.

We dominated our conferences in track for the good part of 20-30 years, from about 1970-2000.

T&F was already being strangled under Lancon's tenure.

It killed him that Authement refused to spend $10G to purchase a half million $ Olympic grade indoor track track system, from the Super Dome.

Part of the lame excuse given to Lancon at the time was the supposedly insurmountable obstacle of storage.

The eventual owner stored the entire system in 2 trailers. Their community has made millions in the years since by hosting west coast invitationals.

That's been a long time now VO. That's like saying we've got a top twenty men's basketball team.

    This.

Cajun Track and Field was country when country wasn't cool.

If there is one more sport out there Louisiana should be hanging its hat on, it's T&F.

    This must be rectified.

    What can we do?

..but the pride we all feel towards Cajun basketball refuses to allow the program to fail.

We should feel the same way towards the Track program.

But it's not succeeding in a top hundred level. Hasn't for decades.

Some people tend to think that we will hire Tommy Badon from LCA and that will help us get some talent back in the program.

When the new outdoor track was approved for construction , the design approved was a clone of the facility at the University of Texas; a world class, NCAA Championship meet capable venue. Authemont put it off and diverted funds to other projects to the point that as actually built it is a mid level high school facility.

The indoor track fiasco was far from being the only way track was screwed when we were winning big.

Sounds similar to building the pool a few feet short so it could never host meets. (And thus never field a team)

Diverting funds while still able to point to a finished product was easier to hide than refusing to find $10G or even ask for a donor.

I'll bet the head T&F Coach at Arkansas would have donated $10G to UL for the indoor system.
