Actually Jay is snapping necks on the radio, and good on him. Good on Topham too.

He's basically agreed with everything I posted here concerning the farce that is the NCAA/NIT.

MAT, he may be whining about the NCAA, but I guarantee you he is not holding Marlin accountable for the crappy scheduling over the last 8 years, or for the lack of quality wins under Marlin's watch. Jay is perfectly happy being 54-85 (26-54 in road and neutral site games) against the top 200 RPI during Marlin's tenure.

Marlin is great beating up on the dregs of Division 1 basketball, but is mediocre at best against teams with any semblance of a pulse.

Like it or not, that record against that competition is a huge part of the reason we get no respect. MTSU and St. Mary's have a legitimate gripe; we do not.

NCAA is a joke, always has been keeping the mid major down .
Win the Sun Belt Tourney so they can't keep u down . How many times have we won regular season championship in Marlin's reign as head coach ? How many times tournament champ ? Runner up in regular season ? Runner up in tournament ?

    Our conference finishes (in order) under Marlin: Tied 2nd, 4th, 8th, 3, 4, 4, Tied 6th, 1st.

The year we were 3rd, we won the tournament.

He also points out Marlin won the first SBC Championship ever and that is true to my knowledge. Coach Evans and Coach Lee did not win any outright season championships. But if it comes down to 3 games in March, do those season championships mean as much as NCAA bids? I can tell you it didn't when Coach Evans was here, most people hated losing to Western Kentucky or Middle Tennessee, but the NCAA Tournament bids were fun.

So, while I agree with most of his comments, the improvement of the UL MBB over the last 5 years doesn't change my question, what should be fans reasonable expectation for NCAA appearances in years? Yes, we have 1 in the last 5 seasons.
One in the last 8 seasons.

We have not really improved over the last 5 years. We have been third, fourth, fourth, sixth and first in a conference that has no MTSU and no WKU. Our record looks a little better, but any way you slice it we are 54-85 against the top 200 RPI over the last 8 years, with only 2 years in that span being above .500 against that level of competition.

Yes, talk of a coaching change is basically meaningless at this stage other than letting people voice their opinion (always value in that). It will not happen even if we get blown out Wednesday. Once again Dr. Maggard thinks very highly of Coach Marlin and his is the opinion that counts. Now were a majority of the fan base to think otherwise things could change. However, people who want a change (don't deny there are some) are a definite minority at this point. Focus on the team as the coach is not in question and likely won't be for some time.

Mike, I think you might be surprised at the number of people who are not satisfied with the direction our program has taken. Many people want us to elevate the level of competition we play to make our program relevant on a larger stage. When Marlin has done this, the results have been less than spectacular. We are paying him a significant amount more than any other coach in this conference and he has not delivered on a level commensurate with his compensation.

I agree his job is in no danger this year, but I do think the pressure is on for him to improve both scheduling and results.

Don't know about raise (doubt it). However many believe his current contract calls for an automatic extension with either a regular season or conference tournament championship. That goes back to his original contract negotiated by David Walker. Therefore he is likely to be here three more years.

The no. of people who want a change is different than those expecting improvement. We all want that. I have no doubt there are many not satisfied. However, I also know there are more who support the current staff strongly and I firmly believe they are the majority.

I'm in that number, Mike. While I'm not satisfied and want continued improvment - from scheduling to results... I think scheduling is much more difficult than any of us can fathom. No "good" teams want to come here and take a loss. We are traditionally tough to beat at home and many refuse to play us here for that reason. I do see steady improvement (after hitting the reset button twice in early years). I believe Coach Marlin is doing it the right way and the quality young men coming through the program are evidence of that. Going forward, I think he continues to improve, although, replacing Stove, Washington, and Bartley will be no easy task.

My expectation is to compete for the conference regular season and tournament championship EVERY year - top 3 or 4 should be a realistic expectation every year. I would like to make the NCAA tournament at least once every 3 years, but I could live with 1 in 5 years under the current circumstances of having to win the tournament to get in as long as at least 1 in 5 ends in an NIT bid. So - at least one NCAA and one NIT appearance every 5 years. I think that is a realistic MINIMUM expectation for this program at this point. Do I want more than that. Yes. But, trying to be realistic. I would be thrilled with NCAA every year or every other year - but that is not going to happen any time soon - regardless of who our head coach is.

Mike, when the man uses lack of funding as a reason for not buying a quality home game, then forks over 50k to play in a bogus tournament, something is not congruent. I don't trust him on scheduling matters. There is a new sheriff in town, so that may improve. You do trust him in that regard, and I understand that.

My major complaint is his inability to beat quality teams at an acceptable rate. 54-85 against the top 200 RPI is putrid when you are being paid more than any other coach in the conference. One title and one tournament title in 8 years is not acceptable. An average finish of 4th in a conference as putrid as the Sun Belt is not acceptable. A road record below 40% is not acceptable.

The big concern for those who strongly support the staff should be whether he can start winning against good teams and winning more on the road, if scheduling improves.

Obviously that won't be part of the administration's position. Besides, I think the regular season championship already bought him an extension due to a provision in the current contract.
