    Default OT: Unwritten rules

Are there any unwritten rules in football like there are in baseball.

For example in baseball you dont steal bases when winning by ten, and you dont bunt in the ninth inning to break up a no hitter.

To apply to football would a twenty point or more lead be a time that someone should not go for a two point coversion, or not fake punt... If any others please post.

    Thanks.

I've seen both of those things done this year. Coaches have their reasons. Why'd Ole Miss go for two? Get to fifty I wonder why?

Get to a 28 point lead so we are 4 touchdowns behind.

    IOW no unwritten rules.

Back in the nineties TAMU ran a reverse on us leading by fifty and less than a minute to go. Steve Spurrier wouldn't let up saying he's just running his offense for the back ups to gain experience.

Thanks, good feedback, so should baseball unwritten rules stop being obeyed as well?

Those unwritten rules are slowly going away. The influx of the younger American generation and the Latin ballplayers playing with more flair is starting to gain ground. Players are starting to have more fun again on the field and not worrying about the old way of doing things.

Good point. Not sure if that is good or bad, but point is on target!

There is a reason some rules remain unwritten. They don't make sense.

    Nice catch.

That's the thing about unwritten rules, they kill productive conversations.

Someone is going to regret that decision if we win out without a title

.....with a "half distance to the goal penalty added"......with the results of this year's conference race, parity comes to mind....what in the hell happened to USA or what is the deal with the 53-0 loss to Ga ?

Not even an unpredictable ball with pointed tips can explain those outcomes.

Female genitalia? Where have we heard a coach use that phrase before. Seems to be common in sports.

Unwritten rule in basketball...going check the clock at the end of a game to make sure the time is exact to the tenth of a second when a shot was made to determine how much time is left, if any. NEVER TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE REACTION TIME STARTING THE CLOCK PRIOR.

Sorry about the caps, drives me freaking crazy.

Seems when football ref throws flag for delay of game, then marks off the yards, he is actually delaying the game longer than the offending team did. Not exactly the best way to teach them what they did is wrong

It has nothing to do with actual length of game.

Unfair extra time to scheme plan and maneuver
