Why is Hud always bringing in so many Juco kids? Seems like it's Hard to build a program like that. Can one of you experts educate an old man?

HUD has missed on just over on 60% of the signing classes between 2013-2015. Either the players have left the program, never made it to campus or not talented enough to make the 2 deep roster by their 3rd year.

When that happens, you have to backfill with JUCO talent. Combine that with two losing seasons and some coaches look for a quick fix to spark the depth chart.

It's a risky move because if those JUCO/transfer players ( see Anthony Jennings) don't work out, you threw away the opportunity to develop a 4 year player.

These were probably guys who qualified late. Youhave to graduate from JUCO with a 2.6 in order to be eligible. Some of these guys may have needed to go to summer school to meet that standard. In some cases they may be taking spots that were thought to go to HS guys who did not qualify. Having said that I am not sure we bring in more JUCO's than the average mid major.

Based on pedigree, Miller seems as though he could be the real deal at DB

Coach Bill Snyder at K State routinely brings in JUCOs every year to help restock his roster. Seems to work out for that program. At least there's two years of eligibility for these players as opposed to the graduate transfers having only one year.

Kansas has a robust JC system, like Mississippi, Arizona, & California.

Several programs actually have success with using a lot of JUCO transfers. They can be highly skilled players that for any number of reasons didn't or couldn't make it to D1 campuses. In sun belt, I think Troy used to constantly backfill positions or load up with juco talent. They were good for a while.

We are middle of the pack to below average on the amount we bring in, the teams that bring in the most are at 35-40 over a 4 year period.

Contrary to the opinion of some on the radio, we should definitely utilize the JUCO route more often.

Need look no further than Ruston to see how a G5 program does it right.

How many does tech have? I think we are at 25 or so. As best I can tell, Tech has around 15, between transfers and Juco players. I'm not trying to be argumentative, just trying to understand. Thanks

The Nechs seem to load up w/juco players every year and they're always competitive. Maybe the CAJUNS need to do more of the same.

I believe they have less than us!

I think we think Tech loads up on transfers beause some of their transfers have been high profile (and high impact) additions to their program. I don't know where the line is on transferring limited time, not-trained-by-your-program athletes - that begins to create huge swings in program output. If you are a failure at recruiting, developing, retaining and using talent... and that's why you're having to backfill with transfers... I'd say something is wrong with the program. If you're winning more than losing year in year out - it is irrelevant how much your program uses transfers.

    It's like this.

I went back 5 years and looked at signees on signing day. Tech has had 22 JC/CC signees over that time. We have had 20. So, it's not that Tech is loading up on JC's and were not. It's just that Tech is much better at recruiting/talent evaluation than we are.

In addition to the signees, the transfer issue that you mentioned is right on point. They don't really use more transfers than us, it's just that they are better at that too.

I've been saying that for a long time. Once Rebowe and Saunders we're gone, our recruiting definitely declined.

I think it's deeper than that.

I believe the recruiting gap that exists between us and Tech is there for a few main reasons.

    1) They own us. The reason we hate it so much when they bring up the head to head record is because it's true.

    2) Program defining wins. Nothing grabs the attention more of recruits and fans than big time, P5 wins. Tech has had a boatload of these. We got Jack Squat. Nobody cares about Bowl wins over other G5 schools.

    3) We have a high school offense. Years and years of focusing on these "wide open" offenses because that is what the kids want has lead us into the bottom of the FBS barrel with Total Offense. We focus on athletes to run a Spread, then we all wonder why we can't score. Tech focuses on getting real Quarterbacks. Consequently, they stay near the top in Total offense year to year, and attract recruits.
