I read this earlier. Only conclusion I can come to, NMSU will not be a part of the SBC plans going forward.

So NMSU spurned the Sun Belt to join Benson's WAC. Now Benson spurns them when they want to come back

Good basketball add. That covers all the positives for adding NMSU

But the NMSU offer to throw in additional money was to address the Eastern Schools' concerns - i.e.: travel costs.....

Wow, that's surprising. If the Sun Belt didn't want NMSU to be part of the conference why did they invite them for football in the first place?

    Good question.....

Answer lies in why would anyone pay millions to get into the Sunbelt? My best guess....IMO Talks must have happened to drop football only members. They are doing what is needed to save their football team. Allows Sunbelt to drop Idaho, keep NMSU. Then becomes travel partner with TSU for indoor sports.

An eastern school was always going to be added to help travel within the Eastern division.

The proposal by NMSU was nice, and I think they will be brought in eventually when we find another all-sport school the presidents deem worthy of membership. This coupled with letting Idaho go will get a 12/14 lineup. This is where we are heading.

By the way, the rumor is Liberty offered 10 million up front for an invite.

NMSU, 4.4 mill, Liberty 10 mill, seems SBC membership is very valuable.

Only valuable to NMSU to be in a FBS conference as a full member cannot be easily run off, and the only conference for Liberty who will probably take an FCS in the foreseeable future.

UL's cut with both NMSU & Liberty is just over $1M. Fund this into an aggressive annuity (income guarantees available over 7% tax free for UL annually....forever) and it more than covers non football travel expenses for both schools perpetually. Core travel expenses for those two will forever be non-existent.

Change conferences & you have $1+M of any exit fee already in place.

This is entirely my opinion, but I see the next add coming next summer. I think the presidents couldn't agree on the 14th school to be a full member to go along with NMSU. I hear Liberty nearly got the votes. I'm speculating that the holdouts are giving schools like Missouri State and James Madison one more year to get their minds right. If they don't, you will probably see Liberty or EKU added. NMSU will be full member regardless.

Sun Belt geography is a mess, no matter who the next additions are.

You'd really think mid-major FBS presidents could put their heads together and come up with something better than this.

I think what is stopping regional conferences is the current state of rapid change in the college athletic landscape. COA, new TV deals, change in the governing structure, etc. Once the dust settles on a few major items, you will see regionality return to realignment.

It never has, and it is not about to. Too many people won't play with this one or that one unless forced to.

When that regionality does return, I would like to see us in the following conference:

    SWC

West - Houston, Rice, SMU, Tulsa, N. Texas, UTEP, UTSA, Texas State
East - Memphis, Tulane, Louisiana, UCF, USF, S. Miss, Ark. State, LA Tech
