Thread: Two schools in talks for future league membership

  1. UL Football Two schools in talks for future league membership

Sun Belt Conference commissioner Karl Benson this week identified Eastern Kentucky, as expected, and Coastal Carolina as two schools the league at least has had talks with regarding their potential interest in possible future membership in the league.

The Sunbelt is like a bad dream, and I can't wake up.

Cue people complaining about every school that gets mentioned as if there are actually good schools lining up to join the Sun Belt.

I've heard that Benson is leaning toward the "superconference" concept:
    1. UL
    2. ULM
    3. ASU
    4. NSU (Northwestern)
    5. NSU (Nicholls)
    6. MSU
    7. NLU
    8. UTA
    9. SLU
    10. Lamar
    12. SFA
    13. USA
    14. Troy
    15. UALR
    16. GA St.
    17. GA So
    18. App St.
    19. UNO
    20. Liberty
    21. NMSU
    22. Idaho
    23. EKU
    24. Coastal Carolina

I believe this is where we are headed in the next few years...

    WEST

    New Mexico State
    Texas State
    UTA
    Arkansas State
    Little Rock
    ULM
    Louisiana

    EAST

    South Alabama
    Troy
    Georgia Southern
    Georgia State
    Eastern Kentucky
    Appalachian State
    Coastal Carolina

You've got eventually 12 and a championship game for football.

    Several, recent NCAA tourney participants.

    A GREAT baseball league.

When CUSA splits, and it will, we will get the call, but until then, this is what is called making the best of the cards you are dealt.

Of all the options, Coastal Carolina is by far the best on out there. Follow sports people.

Slappy FTW. If we have to toil in this conference, mine as well get some away games with good golfing and nice beaches. Adds to our baseball lineup as well.

Your league president says, "this is what you need to do to move forward", and the members say nope. Then, the members think the best course of action is to play "Weekend at Bernie's" with a dead football program. Next, will be the coming TV contract meltdown. Finally, you have got a group of schools in the east with no histories in FBS to speak of that have this league by the short ones and are not letting go.

    You can't see what's coming?

A conference that can't come to an agreement on anything...won't be a conference for very long. Did they teach reading tea leaves in Ruston?

Was hoping for a rational , non emotional response from y'all. First you go from wanting UABs spot to trashing CUSA again?!! You know damn well that CUSA is doing just fine. No good reason for our conference to go 16 at this time.

I can't speak for everyone but I wanted the CUSA spot until CUSA decided that it would rather endulge in the fantasy that UAB football is really going to come back from the dead just because some folks pinky promised the money without any apparent intention to follow through.

Stupidity like that is not an endearing trait.

Coastal Carolina is a great add and a huge boost for this conference in baseball. Gets us to divisions, which will help all sports.

I'd be excited to welcome CC to the Belt. I'd go so far as to say I'd rather stay in the Belt with CC than leave for CUSA.

Sunbelt Re: Two schools in talks for future league membership

Costal Carolina is NOT about football, in fact, as a distant dream with only about 7.5 k attendance at games. Small stadium, think Strawberry Stadium at SLU, and a big, but transitioning population similar to the Lafayette MSA of 450K.

Someone asked a really smart question, if we do not offer a football carrot why would they be interested in a bigger league that offers no better access to the NCAA.

    Eastern Kentucky? Really, Eastern Kentucky?
