I tried to leave a comment, no luck. I was going to make a simple post:

UM: Universities of Missouri, Montana, Mississippi, Maine, Minnesota, Michigan, Massachusetts, and a couple dozen others.
It isn't that hard. Lou is the abbreviation. Just Lou. No LA, ULL, UL-L, UL-Laf, UL-Laffy or anything else

Lou is the same as Arkansas, Ark, Mississippi, Ole Miss, or just Miss, Alabama, Bama, Tennessee, Tenn, Missouri, Mizzou, Nebraska, Neb

None of these schools use the U in front, and it is permissible.

I would prefer Louis but that sounds like Louisville. Just Lou

Don't Give up, Don't ever Give up!!!!

We really only started pushing the simple "LOUISIANA" athletically a few years ago.
It seems to be catching on more than "UL" and is totally legal.
I still don't see why the university doesn't use the abbreviated version of "LA" which is also legal for sport stats.

Let them use whatever, while we use "LOUISIANA" on everything. It will come around.

I don't agree with LA, it sounds to much like Los Angeles. That's why I would just use the first three letters and call it a day.

LA is a context based visual more so than an audible.

If you see LA on the scoreboard and Louisiana everywhere else, you mind doesn't say "L.A." it says Louisiana.

Well, at various times we've considered ULA, like UVA and UGA. UGA, of course has two interpretations, since it's located in Athens. I believe in the past ULA was rejected because it could be interpreted as UL-Acadiana. I don't think that would happen, but I wouldn't mind it if it did.

You're right, LA could be misinterpreted as Los Angeles (there is no U Los Angeles), but LOU could be misinterpreted as Louisville, and I think I've seen L'ville listed that way on ESPN.

it doesn't matter to me whether it is Lou, ULA or LA. We just got to get rid of the UL-L, ULL, UL-Laf, UL-Laffy or any other reference y'all can think of

But that's the problem, isn't it? We can't get rid of those without stating clearly what we want to be called...

All it has to say is that correct abbreviation for University of Louisiana ... at Lafayette is (LA) any other abbreviation when referring to the University of Louisiana ... at Lafayette is prohibited

We had a UL alum as Governor who was worthless regarding UL. And her husband worked for the university. I can only hope our Acadiana delegation in conjunction with a new governor would support us in this. Someone will have to make it a priority issue.

    That is my point.

LA is totalling legal and so is LOUISIANA. (Athletic teams only)

It is very simple and legal.

As a general rule, no. UNC-Chapel Hill has its own Identity/brand just as USC-Columbia does. Normally, neither school is refered to as just Carolina even though as you pointed out USC-Columbia has Carolina on their jersey's.

Mascots have also been an issue at both schools/athletic teams. UNC uses a live Ram for its on field mascot along with a couple of students dressed as such. USC-Columbia now uses a live rooster along with the cartoonish human mascot. USC also uses the roosters crowing as a rally sound during games. At UNC, they just whine. There's just something right about a beautiful SC girl talk'n Cocks during football season. Er...Gamecocks that is.

The correct term for the USC mascot is anthropomorphic. That means animal that does everything a human does.

Since we going out on a limb, I say don't mess with LA and we just go with Ana it could be used for Louisiana and Acadiana, just like Alabama uses Bama.

I wasn't agreeing with you on LA which to me looks like we are abbreviating Los Angeles. I was just saying it is time to get rid of UL-Laf, ULL or any other reference for UL- Lafayette and stick with abbreviations that just reference Louisiana which we do agree upon.

Now I do like ULA, but under the LSU rule ULA is not legal.

If the University decides that LA is how you reference University of Louisiana ... at Lafayette athletically good role with it. No other abbreviations should be acceptable by the University.

Taken from Ole Miss Game Notes on page 2. Look at how Ole Miss says what is acceptable usage of their name. It is on a pdf file, so I can't copy and pace, nor can I X-out the way they did it. It is simple, clear, and leaves no doubt about what to call them.

    OLE MISS REBELS STYLE GUIDE

    Name

    Ole Miss (preferred)
    University of Mississippi
Mississippi - X-out as not acceptable

    Nickname

    Rebels

Taken from LOUISIANA Game Notes - we don't call it a Style Guide and it is lost on page 4 with no heading. It is not easily found. It says:

    WE ARE LOUISIANA

There is confusion among the national sports organizations as how to refer to the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns.
Our official name is the University of Louisiana ... at Lafayette, but much like our opponents around the country, we simply go by Louisiana when referring to our athletic programs.
Although we proudly refer to our University with its full title for academic purposes, we ask that Louisiana, Ragin' Cajuns or Cajuns be used to refer to us athletically.

Also, our Game Notes used to say LOUISIANA Game Notes, very similar to how Ole Miss formats theirs. Now, our Game Notes have a huge RAGIN CAJUNS on the left side emphasized and a very small Louisiana on the right half of the page. The entire Game Notes front page is horribly laid out.

This lends to what appears to be a disturbing trend that we are shifting to this year. Ragin Cajuns is now becoming the prominent logo we use with a seemingly de-emphasis on the LOUISIANA Ragin Cajuns logo in all sports. Look at Ole Miss Game Notes and our Game Notes for the Ole Miss game vs. last year's Arkansas game (hope the links work - taken from CajunDreDog's Game Info Center and RaginCajuns.com website).
