This crap is frustrating... but intelligent options simply do not exist. We stay with our official name and go with our nickname. If/when we have many of our goals in place, we'll get much more respect for our preferred nickname. But, we'll have little to no chance of an official switch to it. I'm not the least bit concerned about these outside opinions. They've never ever had our interests in mind when dealing with us.
I don't know. Auburn and Clemson are the names of the small towns those universities are located in and both cities have high schools with those same names. Yet, it doesn't effect them. Are they more regional than Acadiana? At least Acadiana is an area of the state that denotes Cajun Country where we are the Ragin Cajuns. It is clearly a unique identity. And, we have history and tradition as Universite' des Acadiens. Plus, UL Lafayette already has the Lafayette name, be it city or high school, and I don't recall anyone using the Lafayette High School reference to us.

What about Appalachian State, that is a region in North Carolina? How many universities have city names? Does that make them regional? Ex. Akron, Boise State, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Houston, Louisville, Memphis, Miami, Troy, & Tulsa. Is Northern Illinois not a region of that state, or East Carolina, or Southern Cal, North Texas, etc.? What about Northwestern of the Big 10? It isn't even located in the Northwest part of the US or of Illinois, but it is in the Northwest area of Chicago.

I agree, this is extremely frustrating. Do I want to change? No. But, I am open to it if it will resolve this name debacle. We differ on how we think Acadiana University will be accepted. We would be known as Acadiana, AU, just like Clemson and Auburn. It would not take long to take root. We would not share our identity with any other university and that is a good thing. I also think the Acadiana region would embrace the university much better than Louisiana-Lafayette.

Come on Houston... you're smarter than that. Auburn and Clemson are established beyond compare. We do not need to jack around... again... with our name. We're already laughed at for so many stupid name, mascot, and symbol changes to represent us... we're unrepresented. We look like a desperate teenage girl trying to dye her hair every other week to get a new identity. Let's build on our goals and make not being respectful toward our preferred name as unreasonable as possible.

Hmmm, the "I don't have ties to any university" uses the rustonian favorite "Laffy" to refer to Lafayette. Yeah, just an impartial observer who happened by this message board and thought he'd stick around for seven pages.

Just keep the message steady...UL. Steady and consistent, no drama.

LSU wasn't always LSU. Was Louisiana State for decades. Even ULMost has figured out to stick with ULM.

Just extremely frustrated with our never ending name predicament and the lack of anything being done to rectify it.

I live in Lafayette and call it laffy to all my friends and family just like I say Allec ( or Ellick not sure the spelling) as short of Alexandria. I had no clue it was offensive. I guess people will get mad when I say br as short for Baton Rouge. The one I will never say however is a N'awlins, that is just dumb.
You sound like an old paranoid man thinking the world is out to get you. I am not out to get anyone, hell HoustonCajun gets it. He is tired of beating his head against the wall, and talking about lack of respect like everyone is in prison and they are going to shank espn-Bristol if they disrespect me one more time.

Well considering I'm from "N'Awlins" and like most other natives pronounce it that way, I guess you have another gripe about me to add to your list. Not that it matters because I don't give a ____ what you think. Same goes for the name of our university, official or otherwise.

But thanks for your concern. We'll file it with all of the suggestions from the tanktoppers, Brokebacks and other outsiders that have our best interests at heart.

Our Official name will always be "University of Louisiana at Lafayette". What we want to earn is the right to use the acronyms "UL" and "University of Louisiana". This is where we are at people and argument is moot. Going to the legal acronym, "Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns" or "Louisiana" for athletics is a start. We have to keep pounding. There is a very valid reason that ULM , Tech and the rest of out so called "sister schools" give us fits over this. They are scared to death. The fans can pretend all that they want to with the "U La La" and UL-X crap but the people running those institutions know what is happening here. Let their fans show their ___....I don't give a damn. I know where we are headed.

    Disagree.

Our current name, to us, is UL. To the rest of the country, we are every abominable variation known to man but UL.

Being Acadiana University might cause some silly people to make a joke here(which they do now anyway), but to the rest of the country our identity problem will be OVER.
