UL Football Ashton Tyler Commits To Louisiana

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajun offensive line has gotten little attention during this record setting season. But high school athletes like Ashton Tyler are more then aware of the guys in the trenches, as he became the Cajuns first official commitment to the 2009 class.

The Cajuns recruiting efforts are really starting to pick up as the season moves along and high school prospects read about Louisiana’s record setting offense. Saturday was a big day for the Cajuns, as a large group of prospects attended the homecoming game against FIU. The Cajun football program came away with its first official commitment of the season in Ashton Tyler, Scouts #159 ranked offensive lineman in the country. Tyler spoke to the Cajun RedZone this morning about his decision to commit to UL, over Louisiana Tech.

The 6-6,270-pounder made a name for himself this summer when he attend a camp a football camp at Southern Miss and manhandled 4-Star prospect Darrington Sentimore of Destrehan High.

In-season verbals? I don't remember this happening often in the past.

And 6-6, 270 as a HS senior is enormous!

not quite a ringing endorsement of this kid by ESPN, I hope they are wrong. I like his size, but after reading this, I guess you never know.

If I recall correctly, our first commit last season and a real early one at that was Joe Duhon. He was "one of us" until about a week before sigining day and then he decommitted and signed with USM.

Me, I'm interested in the ones who actually sign with us.

Hello, Dave?? Mr Obama says we have 57 states, right? Lets say we have approx 110 football playing highschools in each state(probably alot more, but just for comparisons sake lets say 110). 110 X 57 =6270 football playing schools. Each school has a center, 2 guards, 2 tackles= 5 o-linemen (starters) 5 X 6270 =31,350 o-linemen in the USA Our guy is ranked #202 by ESPN.....Dave, I'll take him.

after reading the ESPN review it seems the kid has athletic ability and size he just needs work on fundamentals. If brad bustle can start for UL (did not start in highschool), this guy can learn and be a big help. You can't teach a kid to grow 6'6" but you sure can give him pointers. I'll take him!!!

  18. UL Football Higgins OL Ashton Tyler commits to UL

As a younger brother, Higgins offensive guard Ashton Tyler can attest to the value of being No. 1, even if only temporarily.

Tyler became the first prospect to verbally commit to Louisiana's 2009 recruiting class during an unofficial visit to the Acadiana campus on Saturday to see UL's Sun Belt Conference leaders defeat Florida International at Cajun Field.

Tyler is the second member of his family to have the opportunity to play college football. His older brother Kermit was an All-Metro offensive lineman, who now is a freshman at Ole Miss after signing with the Rebels in February.

Tyler, 6-foot-6, 275 pounds, said he actually chose UL-L earlier last week, but followed the advice of Ragin' Cajuns assistant Tim Rebowe and waited to reveal his decision until after he had delivered the news in person to Coach Rickey Bustle following the 49-20 victory against FIU.

We know that several "local" prospects are holding UL scholarship offers.

There's always chatter about UL signing more "local" players, so why don't they commit to the Cajuns?

That's a great question. I have always been a bit suspicious about all of the grumbling about why we don't sign more local players. No. 1, look at the rosters - we DO have a LOT of locals. No. 2, road blocks at some of the local schools. No. 3, many young men want to check out schools outside the area ("the grass is always greener ..." syndrome).
