    Default The Pelican

Sorry I've been MIA, new things coming, including a redesign of ultoday.com.

New article up; I promised some of you I would explain how the Pelican became the mascot of Louisiana.

Interesting. Everyone seems to readily accept symbology without knowing much about its origins. I thought the brown pelican was selected strictly due to its regional uniqueness, not just partly.

I was doing some research on the Pelican myself and was surprised to learn that the Pelican is mentioned several times in the Bible and because of its fondness for lonely, desolated spots, it is used in the Bible as a symbol for locations of utter desolation.

Kind of like Louisiana after a hurricane.
