    Default Campus Clean up

This is what I have seen on my afternoon walks on campus.

They are painting Foster Hall (one of the oldest buildings on campus). It looks very nice. I hope they move on to DeClouet Hall next (another very old building) as they will not have to scrape too much paint off of it as there is not much paint left on the building.

They are painting and water proofing H. L Griffin Hall, it also looks like they are re-roofing it.

There is a Man lift parked near Broussard Hall (Physics) and it looks like they might be getting ready to paint it also. It does not look like this equipment is for the Burke-Hawthorne renovation/expansion project

It looks like a good portion of the soffit and facia on Maxime Doucet Hall is in very bad shape and needs to be replaced.

I noticed some directional boring equipment parked next to E K Long Gym. There were some empty spools for cable conduit but I have not seen any excavation on campus.

They are continuing to repair sidewalks around campus with most of the work now being done in the quad. I have not seen much progress on this for a while though. If they don't get moving they will be caught by the start of school.

I looked at the press box during the scrimmage Saturday and noticed all of the facia on the stadium side of the press box had been repaired. Probably when they replaced electrical equipment last week.

When I leave for work every morning I hear the sound of weed eaters, leaf blowers and lawn mowers on campus. I have seen the grass trimmed off of the side walks and the general look of the campus is cleaner. I have peeked inside some of the buildings and seen that the insides of the buildings are very clean.

They have marked the practice field for the band and have set up a tent near the percussion building.

You can tell that school is close because I saw Indian Students playing Cricket in the parking lot between Fletcher and Rougeou halls. They haven't done that since the Spring Semester.

There is a project under design right now to re-roof E K Long Gym.

Glad to read a "first hand" view of the improvements going on on campus. I was at the Cypress Lake last week and found it so beautiful. FIVE alligators! I took visitors to see the lake and got a real treat. What an amazingly special part of the campus!

That was done by the band. We start band camp either Monday or Tuesday depending on if your status as a student (new marcher, veteran) and what you play (percussion and color guard, or winds)

Have they removed the "Southwestern" sign on the EK Long Gym? If so, has it been replaced with anything?

I hope not! I guess a similar sign that said "Louisiana" would be nice, but that "Southwestern" is classic. Part of our heritage.

I feel the same way. Keep the sign.

I agree or they could take it down, put it in an enclosed glass case and put it inside of EKL Gym. Sort of like a hall of fame. Come to think of it, perhaps they should put it in the athletic complex's trophy case.

The "Southwestern" sign is still there. I had to take a walk to make sure. It is indeed classic. The Gym was built in 1938. There is a corner stone on the left hand side of the entrance with names and dates.

I also noticed the plaque on Foster Hall tonight. It said the building was erected in 1901 and renovated in 1938. The building looks to be in great shape and could probably last another 100 years. Unlike the old student union buildings across from the police station/post office. They are just terrible.

I think the ultimate slap in the face is Fletcher Hall. Of all things, the building that houses the Architecture department is the building that is the least sensitive to the architecture of the school. If I remember correctly, there was a design competition amongst architects to see who would get the job for the building. That design won. It was during one of the Edwin Edwards administrations. Maybe, one of the architects had a Friday night poker game with EWE and "lost" a good chunk of money. LOL. That building doesn't have a plaque either, I guess they weren't proud of the results or something.

I did notice at the stadium Saturday that almost ALL of the concrete joints on both sides of the stadium have failed joint sealant. I would hope they would address that during the upcoming pressure washing. The student side was in really bad shape. I guess because it is not protected by an upper deck.

Wow! This is very encouraging. It was inexcusable how the campus was left to fall apart and wallow in trash under Dr. A. It was embarrassing. I can't imagine how much work there is to do after so many years of neglect.

hopefully Cypress Lake will or already has been cleaned out. The last time we were there it looked like the grass had taken over and that it had filled in quite a bit.

Fletcher was opened my second semester at U(S)L. It was a hell of a lot better than taking classes at OK Allen where we actually had ice one the
tables during class. I agree Fletcher's look is kind of sterile but there was
a lot of good art coming out of there.
To me the crappiest piece of architecture is the Cajundome, wasted space
    and material galore.

when the stadium was finally paid off I think about 2-3 years ago we needed to keep the money flow to pay for repairs --Our leg. delegation and admin. of course had their heads in unfortunate areas!!!
