Thread: UL to Establish National Research Institute ( NIMSAT )

  1. Research UL to Establish National Research Institute ( NIMSAT )

BATON ROUGE - What would happen if a Category 5 hurricane moved up the mouth of the Mississippi River to New Orleans or if a strong tsunami hit Hawaii? How is the best way to prepare for and respond to a disaster?

Scientists at the University of Louisiana ... at Lafayette will be able to answer those questions in the National Incident Management Systems and Advanced Technologies Center approved Friday by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors. The next step is approval by the Board of Regents.

Robert Stewart, UL's vice president of research and graduate studies, told the board's Academic Affairs Committee that the NISMAT center would focus on "developing research and tools for disaster managers" so they can develop plans for handling disasters and ways to avert them.

Researchers would use the LITE center in developing "what-if" scenarios and develop plans for handling disasters, whether natural or man-made.

Research UL to Establish National Research Institute ( NIMSAT )

The Board of Regents will consider Wednesday whether to approve for UL a research center that creates technology to assist with disaster management and mitigation.

The National Incident Management Systems and Advanced Technologies Institute at UL will do what most disaster research centers do not - convert research into technology tools to assist in disaster mitigation and management, said Ramesh Kolluru, director of UL's Center for Business and Information Technologies.

The idea for the NIMSAT evolved from projects began through that center, but a separate center is needed to focus on disasters, Kolluru said.

"NIMSAT will be focused in the development of tools and the transfer of those tools to decision makers," Kolluru said. "That's a function that's not in the mission of any of the existing centers."

  6. Default Ladnrieu backs plan

Acadiana - U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu pledged her support of a new institute launched Friday at the University of Louisiana ... at Lafayette that will use high-tech research tools to help both the public and private sectors better prepare for natural and man-made disasters.

The National Incident Management Systems and Advanced Technologies Institute’s headquarters will be at UL.

But the program, known as or NIMSAT, is a partnership that includes universities, researchers and private businesses from across the country.

“NIMSAT is a key public-private partnership working to prepare us for the next disaster that strikes, be it natural or man-made,” Landrieu said. “Its state-of-the-art technology provides the kind of testing we need to simulate disasters and smartly direct the response of government and the private sector.”

Partners include Wal-Mart, Tulane University, SGI, CISCO and James Lee Witt Associates, founded by a former director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Passing thoughts? Could Moon Griffon, and Moon Landrieu be related? What are the last names of Senator Landrieu children, and what does Senator Landrieu's husband do to justify his place in the family tree? Perhaps his job is to collect the drops, a job Jefferson should have assigned to one of his moronic family members.

Or could it be that the state is making its first attempt at awarding a university for actually showing a quality product in a fiscally sound method.
