UL Baseball Corey Luebke not starting

... as I referenced as a possibility in my College Station Regional profile, Luebke will not start vs. the Cajuns Friday ... Jake Hale (former closer and #2) will.

"Buckeye ace Cory Luebke has shouldered a heavy load recently, throwing 7+ innings twice in the Big Ten Tournament and three 7+ inning outings in nine days. A start Friday afternoon in the Texas heat would be three starts in the last eight days and four in the last fourteen days. As such, there is a remote chance that Coach Bob Todd may elect to go with Jake Hale in the opener."

Note that Jake Hale pitched a complete game effort against Michigan last Thursday 5/24. He also relieved Cory Luebke in the Big Ten Tournament title game this past Sunday 5/27. Hale pitched 1 1/3 innings to close the title game (earning the win).

FUNNY THING about this board. The first thread we get is about OSU saying we are a weak number 2. WE all think it is in jest by the poster. Wednesday evening Robe is on WWL RADIO 870 AM, and says he has heard that Ohio State players have said we are a weak number 2, and now their coach as much as states he is holding his best pitcher for another day. Humm, whoever posted that may be our guardian angel?

I am sure that Robe got that second/third/fourth hand from someone that read this board and misinterpreted.

Bob Todd is holding back Luebke because, as I stated, he has thrown too much in recent days and is not ready. When I was researching my story, I knew that Luebke was at risk of not being ready for Friday. So, I asked this direct question to the Baseball SID yesterday morning and I have no reason to believe he did not give me the straight scoop. At the time, they were still evaluating. It seems they have now evaluated and made a decision.

What is the scoop on Hale? How hard and what does he throw? From the right or left? Is this a good thing for our hitters? How many innings can we expect to be facing Hale? Who would back him up in the pen? Is it week after Lebuke and Hale?

Hale has only started 3 games. Given TAM is 14-12 against lefties and about 30 and nuttin' against righties like Hale, the move probably is solid, assuming they beat us and meet TAM Saturday. It's a dice roll for them. 3 seeds roll dice. Advantage: Cajuns

This is a good news/bad news for the Cajuns. Good news is that we do not and probably will not see OSU's best pitcher (plus the best pitcher in the Big 10.)

The bad news is that the Cajuns are a much better club vs Lefties then Righties.

But overall, I would much rather face Hale then Luebke. I think this gives the Cajuns a huge edge. It also alows us to pitch Moody, a lefty against A&M should we both win. The Aggies are much better vs Rightees then lefties.

I like the way this is all lining up for the Cajuns!!!!

    Geaux Cajuns!!!!

    From my story ...

"Luebke relies heavily on his 90-92 mph fastball, which he spots well and occasionally gets hitters to chase high. He also throws a slider and a "show me" change. Closer Jake Hale has taken over the #2 starter role in recent weeks and threw a complete game win over Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament. Hale is another power pitcher with a 90-93 mph fastball and a decent 1-to-7 slider."
