All I can answer as a Tech fan is, the teams USM, Houston, Rice, SMU, Tulsa, Memphis, UAB , UCF......these are teams we've played and it just seems we played them here and there over the years. Some were WAC games. Maybe the OP was thinking the same and is as surprised as I am. And I have no idea how scheduling factors in with this. But, as I said, I trust you looked it up. Otherwise, we're both going to look stupid. Wow, 3 games by 4 points......I won't bother with any hows and whys......the point is, we lost. We'll have to try to do something about that.

I used ESPN...you can go all the way back to 2002 and look at who played who and what the score was. I was at the last Tech-UL matchup. I had a good time in Ruston. Nothing compared to a Saturday in Lafayette, but...nice. The OP stated that he thought the reason Tech never returned the home and home with UL was because they went a different direction and started scheduling more OOC games with CUSA members. This is highly inaccurate, and grounds for a wet willie. You state...teams Tech has played...while this is true...it's far from having hardened rivalries. Let's look at them one by one over the period of 1991 to 2011.
CUSA Now: 26 total 16-10 61% winning percentage
USM 1-3
ECU 0-1
UAB 4-0
Marshall 0-0
Tulsa 3-2
UTEP 4-1
Rice 2-2
Tulane 0-1
North Texas 2-0
FIU 0-0
Old CUSA/New Big East: 12 total 6-6 50% winning percentage
Houston 2-2
SMU 3-1
UCF 1-3
Memphis 0-0
Sunbelt: 28 total 21-6-1 75% winning percentage
UL 7-4-1
ULM 5-0
Arkansas State 7-1
Troy 0-0
FAU 0-0
MTSU 2-1
WKU 0-0
2012 MWC 46 total 14-32 30% winning percentage
Boise 3-9
Nevada 5-7
Hawaii 2-8
Fresno 4-8
2013 MWC 20 total 13-7 65% winning percentage
SJSU 7-4
Utah State 6-3
2013 Screwed with no where to go 15 total 11-4 73% winning percentage
Idaho 5-2
NMSU 6-2
147 total 81-65-1 55% winning percentage
But that number is misleading.
Record against teams Tech wants to be associated with (The cream...BCS teams now or will be the top of the new merger)
(Boise, Houston, USM, ECU, SMU, Memphis, UCF, Tulsa, Nevada, Hawaii, Fresno)
68 total 24-44 35% winning percentage
Record against teams Tech wouldn't have a problem being associated with (current CUSA members and Merger members)
(UAB, Marshall, UTEP, Tulane, North Texas, FIU, Rice, SJSU, Utah State)
36 total 25-11 69% winning percentage
Upper echelon of that group (Marshall, UTEP, FIU)
5 total 4-1 80% winning percentage...hasn't played Marshall or FIU in the past 21 years
Middle echelon of that group (Rice, Utah State, North Texas)
15 total 10-5 66% winning percentage
Lower echelon of that group (UAB, Tulane, SJSU)
16 total 11-5 69% winning percentage
Record against teams Tech would rather not be associated with (current SBC members and the screwed two)
(Idaho, NMSU, Arkansas State, Troy, FAU, MTSU, WKU, UL, ULM)
43 total 32-10-1 74% winning percentage
So in summation...separation is a myth. Tech would have fared better, had they not tried to be something they are not.
Look at their record in the past twenty-one years against the teams they want so badly to be like...35%!!! The only team of that group they had a winning record against was SMU...and they were horrible while Tech played them. Tech directly contributed to Boise's rise to where they are...everyone needs a door mat.
Their record against their new conference mates sans ECU, USM, & Tulsa is inflated due to UAB's awfulness and UTEP's crappy life in the WAC. None of these teams can come out and say...we are better than anything the SBC has to offer.
Their record against the SBC teams is misleading...they stopped playing us...just when we started to pick up. Records against UL, Arkansas State, MTSU, & ULM would be different.
The thing is...trying to play over their heads...is all Tech knows how to do. It's the only way they know how to improve their perception. Winning sure as hell hasn't done that...3 bowls in the past 20 years is nothing to right home about when you are trying to prove separation.
On a lighter note...congrats to Tech...you got what you wanted. Albeit, a watered down version of what you wanted but it's what you wanted none the less. They had a plan and they stuck to it...but looking back on it...was it the right way to go? Had MTSU really pushed for CUSA membership or FIU demanded FAU come along...Tech would have been on the outside looking in. They accomplished their goals, but only by a razor thin margin. Hindsight maybe 20/20...but had Tech decided to join the SBC...they could have been looking at being where they wanted to be all along...instead of backing into a watered down version of it. Tech would have competed for a number of SBC championships, had larger attendance numbers (tarp jokes would have been fewer), and their attractiveness as a football team would have been greater, in my opinion. All they got from being Boise, Fresno, Hawaii, and Nevada's doormat was a wave goodbye and no help for the future. If CUSA had picked another team other than Tech...it would all have been for naught. And it was really close to being that way.
Going forward...I see Tech only winning CUSA championships if both ECU, Tulsa, and USM leave CUSA. With the Big East imploding before our eyes...god knows what will happen. One thing we can all agree on...we all hope this idiocy will be over soon.
Buy the ticket...take the ride.
