I found out yesterday that the renovation project is indeed out for bid. It usually is a 30 day process. That means bids should be due in late July. If the bids come in within the budget it should take about 45 to 60 days for the paper work to get processed. I'm thinking they should get started with construction in late September or early October.

Some minor work going on to get Guillory, (old) Corona and Olivier halls ready for occupancy during the renovation.

Improvements to Olivier Hall (it hurt to take this photo)

A shed to cover entrance to the temporary food storage freezers and coolers. Looks kind of flimsy to me I hope we don't have a Hurricane while this is in use because it's gone if we do.

For some reason I thought they were going to open the view to the swamp. Unless I am thinking of the wrong building it will still be blocked. ?

This building will be demolished AFTER the renovation is completed. Some of the offices in the current union will move here during the renovation.

Looks like I found two good spots to document Student Union Construction.

The north Harris Hall fire escape. McLaurin Gym is behind the trees to the left, Student Union is to the rear and you can just see the wall of Bonin Hall to the right.

and the top of Olivier Parking Tower

I should be able to access both places throughout the entire construction process. The view from the fire escape will be of the new food service wing. This is where the old Saucier clinic was.

Looks like the band practice field is ready for foot steps next week.

Student Union Construction has not started in earnest yet. It looks like they are getting logistics worked out for food service. Food service will be moving to Guillory Hall (the building with the catwalk over Cypress Lake). Other Union services are moving into the eyesores across from campus police.

This area is going to be the new food service wing for the Student Union. This is where the old Saucier clinic used to be. Photo taken from the front of Buchanan Hall

DON'T FREAK OUT!!!! It's not permanent and this building will be demolished after renovation is complete. This is old Corona Hall and is where the cashiers are located.

Cleaned up area around cypress lake by eyesore buildings. The ratty looking fence is to keep the gators in the lake. I hope they did a good job of fixing it. I'm not looking forward to a gator getting out AGAIN!!!

    cleaned-up

The above area was so overgrown for so long I bet many of you did not know this was there. I knew it and every time I passed by I wished they would clean up around it so people could see it. I'm glad they finally did.

I'm sure this area was fairly nice when it was new but the lack of upkeep really makes it look bad. I do hope they can keep Guillory Hall and renovate it. EVERY TIME I go on campus there is somebody there feeding the fish and turtles hoping to get a chance to see a gator.

I spent many a time in Gullory Hall knocking down pins. I even worked there part time while in school for a while. For those who don't remember, the University had a pretty competitive bowling team back in the day.

I took a Bowling class there for PE. I made a spare on a 7 10 split. It came that close to being a gutter ball.

It WAS the old student Union or STU----When you walked in you could see the groups---Each frat had their area --the FB team and some jocks---the commuters---some sorority areas----Pep rallies were held in there and I had my first frito pie!!!

How long do you expect them to fence off the student union like that? I'm assuming a while huh? It's getting really annoying walking around that part of campus now.

I suspect it will be a good while before all the fencing is down. The fencing on Boucher Street should be moved after the drainage project is finished though. I did notice that they fenced around Buchanan Hall so they may have found some money to finish the renovation of that building with the Student Union project.

I do hope that they can do something to keep Guillory Hall. Every time I walk on campus there are always people feeding the fish from the balcony. Mostly families with kids.

Demolition of the middle section of the Student Union building has started.

This is what is left of the entrance to the Bookstore.

    dec-9-1

Same part of the building as seen from the top of Olivier Parking tower. They will not demolish the section to the right but will demolish the section to the left.

    dec-9-3

Opening up the area between the Ball room(left) and the old kitchen (Right). They will not demolish the Ball Room but the kitchen will soon be history.

    dec-9-2

Another view of the same area from the top of Olivier Parking tower.

    dec-9-4

Cypress Lake Gator catching some rays before it turns cold again.
