Lafayette native, Rusty Begnaud had just won his 6th game for the American Association, Pensacola Pelicans.
But, tragedy struck just hours after that game.
Begnaud and teammates, Bo Brown and Sam Smith were celebrating the Pelicans' 9-3 victory against Shreveport at Brown's house.
Begnaud dove head-first into the swimming pool and suffered a fracture of his vertebrae.
The former McNeese State star was taken to a Pensacola hospital and spent Wednesday in surgery.
Pelicans general manager, Talmadge Nunnari says the team is saddened by this event.
Sorry to hear of this tragic accident. The article lists him as a former McNeese pitcher from Lafayette, not a former Cajun pitcher. Regardless, my prayers are with him.Originally Posted by crazycajun
I read about that in the Advertiser this morning. Thoughts and prayers to him.
He was at UL for a while and then transferred.Originally Posted by RaginFan2
Former Cowboy pitching standout rehabbing after being paralyzed from the chest down
A fundraiser in the form of a raffle for former McNeese State baseball standout Rusty Begnaud has been undertaken by the McNeese Diamond Club.
Begnaud was injured last month in a swimming pool accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. He is presently in rehab at Shepherd's hospital in Atlanta.
Cowboy baseball coach Chad Clement said that the fundraiser is a raffle of $100 tickets for $5,000 in cash.
Tickets and more information can be obtained from the McNeese coach at 540-8939, from Richard Cole at 540-2410 or from Eddy Robinson at 477-6922.
The drawing will be held August 23 at 7 p.m. at OB's Bar and Grill in Lake Charles.
I think if any Cajun fan is in a position to do so he/she should support Rusty as they see fit.
I KNOW we all hope for a full recovery.
Some (perhaps) might take the attitude he left UL so is wasn't really a Ragin' Cajun thus no need to support. If possible we should help those in need whether friend or foe, and something I heard once rang in my ear. "Once a Cajun always a Cajun."
Alvin Dark played at LSU for one year before coming to UL before WWII and then he came back to UL afte the war. Yet LSU still claims him, I think we can claim/help RUSTY BEGNAUD, if possible.
I wasn't sure where to put this but I thought you guys might be interested. If not, delete it.

He likes to say every day is an adventure now. Used to be Rusty Begnaud would slip on a uniform, tug up his socks, curl the bill of his cap just so, amble to the mound and grip a baseball, feeling its scars and bruises before trying to sneak 85-mph fastballs past hitters. That seemed like quite the escapade then.

Thank you for posting this. I had read about Rusty's injury, but hadn't seen anything this in-depth. This really makes you stop and think about what really matters in life. We all take far too much for granted.Originally Posted by McNeese72
Thanks for posting the article.
I got to know Rusty a little and his dad a lot more when he played for McNeese. I was heartbroken when I first heard about his injury. It was like, "Oh no, not Rusty" But he looks like he is handling things well. They are very good people.

AT our Fan Day our current team plays against former Cajun players and players from the area playing minor league ball. Rusty has been named as the coach for the alumni for that game here in Lafayette.Originally Posted by McNeese72

A year ago today was Baseball FAN Day
Former Ragin' Cajuns Rusty Begnaud and Kraig Schambough were combining for a 3 hit victory over the current Ragin' Cajuns. Even Brandt Sanders got to be Rusty Begnaud's teammate for a day. LINK
