Fresh off the heels of the school's <s>first two</s> (second and third) bowl victories, Louisiana is sinking a major investment into its football program. After announcing a $115 million athletic facilities master plan in March, the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors approved the Ragin' Cajuns' plans on Tuesday.

While the project will benefit the entire Louisiana athletic department, the football facilities improvement will be included in the first tier of the project.

Brown is facing a healing period of 4-to-6 weeks, the spokesman said. If that’s the case, the senior-to-be should be good to go for UL’s Aug. 31 season-opener at Arkansas.

If its spring-ending scrimmage proved anything, it's that UL appears to be in good hands.

Catching, and throwing.

Such sure seems to be case after starting quarterback Terrance Broadway completed 8-of-12 passes for 107 yards, backup-QB candidate Brooks Haack completed 15-of-19 for 204 yards and two touchdowns, and wideout Jamal Robinson had three receptions for 42 yards and one TD last Saturday at Cajun Field.

Robinson didn't have the day's biggest receiving numbers - No. 3 slot man Lance Pace, a freshman, did that with nine grabs for 87 yards and a TD - but he is expected to be Broadway's top target in 2013.

With senior wideout Javone Lawson gone, senior slot receiver Harry Peoples gone too and senior-to-be ex-wideout Darryl Surgent moved into to Peoples' old slot spot along with returning Bradley Brown, Robinson went into the spring No. 1 on the depth chart ahead of Tulsa transfer Ricky Johnson on one side and James Butler went in No. 1 on the opposite side, ahead of Jared Johnson.

"I've worked with Jamal since he first got here, so I knew what he was capable of," Broadway said. "He just had to grow a little bit, and at the end of last season he really turned it on and showed what he was capable of doing.

"So, it's nothing new for him and Surg (Surgent) and James (Butler) to be making plays out there," Broadway added. "It's different guys without Harry (Peoples) and Javone (Lawson) not being out there," but I think we're still gonna be on track."

Broadway appears headed in the right direction as well.

He went into the spring hoping to refine his footwork, and feels he was able to do just that.

"I'm where I want to be right now with footwork," the junior-to-be said. "Now, since we're going to be off for a while until August, it's time for me to maintain and just keep working at it, so the muscle memory can maintain and remain the same."

The Ragin' Cajuns will take some time off in the weeks to come, report for conditioning work in early June and resume practice with two-a-days in early August.

When they're back at it a few months from now, preparing for their Aug. 31 season-opener at Arkansas, they'll do so with Broadway having nine more starts under his belt as a Cajun than initially anticipated.

He took over UL's starting QB last Oct. 6 against Tulane, after senior Blaine Gautier broke two bones in his throwing hand one week earlier vs. Florida International.

"Terrance (Broadway) is a very smart football player," Cajun center Andre Huval said when asked few days before Saturday's spring game just how much that bonus familiarity will help going forward. "He puts a lot of time in the film room, so (even) if we didn't have that time (last season) we'd pretty close to where we are now - just because he's such a student of the game.

"But, obviously, having seven, eight (actually nine-plus) games last year together - that helps too."

Their unexpected time together last season helped Huval and Broadway learn how to communicate at the line - and on the fly.

"Just those first two weeks, we weren't too sure," Huval said. "We didn't know who would make the call on what. But now that we've done that, we know who's making the check, we know whose job it is. We both see the same thing.

"Sometimes I turn around and tell him, 'Make the check to this,' and he's already doing it," Huval added. "So we're both on the same page, and the (nine) games - I guess that does help a little bit."

The Cajuns also spent much of their spring trying to identify and develop a backup quarterback ready to step in, just in case he should be needed like Broadway was a season ago.

Among the three candidates, Haack up put by far the best numbers Saturday.

He threw several picture-perfect balls, and worked well outside the pocket when he had to, finding receivers who came back to him.

But fellow contenders D'Shaie Landor (6-of-8, 59 yards, no interceptions) and Jalen Nixon (5-of-6, 51 yards, no INTs) both were efficient as well, and Nixon showed that the Cajuns seem interested on getting him on the field one way or another.

"I think all three of them still are at an even level," Broadway said when asked.

"Jalen (Nixon) is working some at running back right now, and they had a package for him, but he did good with what he did (Saturday) with running the football."

Cajuns coach Mark Hudspeth, however, hasn't named a No. 2 yet, and had said previously he may wait until late August before doing so.

Haack, even after throwing for an interception-free 200-plus, suggested he understood that call.

"I feel like it's always good to have a little competition on the job," Haack said. "I mean, it only pushes us every single day to get better. So, I feel like them not telling us just (gives) us the motivation to go out there and keep competing." -->

<!-- Big expectations exist for the 2013 UL Ragin’ Cajuns and a bulk of those expectations are on the defensive side of the ball.

First-year defensive coordinator James Willis has used the spring to install a new system and, in Saturday’s Spring Game, Willis said he finally saw some progress.

“We have had huge progress,” Willis said. “The biggest thing was installing this new system and evaluating a lot of guys. Spring is a time to experiment a little bit. We moved some guys around to see if they could play another position. It was good for us and good for the kids and we are finding out if we can or cannot do certain things.”

Willis said he had very little difficulty in getting the defense to buy into a new system.

He credited the coaching staff with developing “great kids.”

“It’s easy here because of the kind of kids they are,” Willis said. “We have kids that would do anything for you. A lot of guys on this team are from this area. We have guys here who want to be here. When they want to be here, they will play harder.”

UL head coach Mark Hudspeth said he thought the defense was as physical as it had been all spring in the Spring Game. He said he was pleased with how the defense got off the line.

“The defense stepped up, especially on the goal line, and played well,” Hudspeth said. “They flew around today. I saw them playing harder today than in the last scrimmage. I saw them being physical and lining up better. We played with better pad level. It was definitely a step in the right direction.”

A big concern for the Cajuns defense this season will be replacing seniors Melvin White, Jemarlous Moten and Rodney Gillis from a stacked secondary. Gillis may receive a medical redshirt and a sixth year of eligibility, but as of now, Willis said the secondary is still searching for its leader.

“We have to find some depth in the secondary,” Willis said. “We need playmakers. In order for us to be successful, we know we are going to have to be pretty good back there.”

“We lost a lot of starters last year,” Hudspeth added. “We think Rodney may be returning, but until he is here, we are trying to develop kids. Javante Watson is a guy who really developed nicely this spring. We have a lot of kids battling for playing time. We have an influx of junior college kids coming in. This secondary battle will go into the fall.”

Willis said he is becoming more comfortable with the defense, not because they are where they need to be, but because he is figuring out the unknown. He said he is addressing the weaknesses and Saturday, he said it was starting to pay off.

“(Saturday), we were pretty simple, but we were making plays on the ball,” Willis said. “We haven’t had that early in camp. That is always a bonus. Now, we have to make those plays.”

Willis said he doesn’t concern himself with players who are not currently on the team. Though he said his focus is getting the players who are on campus now better, Willis did not downplay the impact Gillis would make should he return.

“I kind of compare it to how when daddy’s home turning off the lights every night,” Willis said. “You almost get used to it. Then, when daddy’s out of town, someone else has to turn out those lights. Right now, no one wants to turn the lights off at night.

“None of these guys have had to be leaders. We have to teach them how to be leaders and keep installing those leadership qualities. Rodney coming back would be huge. There is no doubt, he’d be the one to turn off those lights.”
