UL to host 2 LHSAA state soccer title games
Quote:
The University of Louisiana's recently renovated Cajun Track/Soccer Complex will host the Louisiana High School Athletic Association's annual Nokia Sugar Bowl soccer championships.
The event, which includes the championship game in Divisions I and III in both boys' and girls' competition, is scheduled for March 3-4.
UL interim athletic director David Walker said Sunday the university had approved the hosting of the soccer event in a Friday meeting.
"It's a quick turnaround," Walker said, "but it's a done deal."
The event was scheduled for Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans, but that facility cannot host the event after suffering extensive damage from Hurricane Katrina.
Not a done deal, though, is the state Class 5A baseball tournament, an eight-team event scheduled for May 12-13.
Walker said his department has not made a final decision on whether to host the baseball event at M. L. "Tigue" Moore Field. That event requires a greater financial commitment from the university, including hotel payments for teams traveling more 90 miles. It also falls on a weekend when the UL team is on the road.
The Cajuns will be at Middle Tennessee for a Sun Belt Conference series that weekend, so other sources for staffing the tournament would have to be found.
