Louisiana 1918...2009 Ongoing History of the UL Dairy, Horse Farm

Quote:
Click the Link below to see the history of the UL Horse Farm in its various incarnations starting first with the 1920's Dairy Farm.

The Barn was built around the turn of the Century and was a family farm till the early 20's when UL began using the property as a Dairy Farm. Later it became an Equine Center thus the Horse Farm name. We have-not found any pictures from its family farm days, the oldest picture found so far is from 1922.

The University of Louisiana plans to sell property off of Johnston Street that once was the university's former dairy and horse farm as part of a plan to acquire more property closer to campus, said Ray Authement, UL president.

The university has applied to rezone about 36 of the 100 acres on the property for commercial development. The property backs the residential neighborhoods including Greenbriar subdivision.

The Lafayette Zoning Commission will decide on the matter at a meeting held Oct. 17.

The property hasn't been used as a horse farm since the late 1990s. In the past few years, the property has been used for individual classes such as navigation training for ROTC students and as a field course for the school's autonomous all-terrain vehicle, CajunBot.

The property is just too far from campus, Authement said.

"It's not accessible to use and it's too far from the campus to put classrooms," he said. "We just can't negotiate the traffic with our buses."

The commercial development would be limited to the front of the property, just off of Johnston Street.

"We'll probably sell the rest, but under very restrictive covenants that it would only be used for high-scale residential," Denton said. "We're not going to try to in any way upset our neighbors in that area."

The rest of the story

This money should be spent on athletics. It would be a great beginning to the Ragin Cajun Athletic Foundation.

Great idea. I wouldn't sell frontage property unless we could sell the whole thing.

Dr A is far from being an idiot and I can assure you that he will not pocket any of the money derived from the sale of the property. You and I may not agree with some of his ideas/philosophy, but to call him an idiot is a bit far fetched.

UL 1984, 1999 . . . . Re: Authement to sell off former farm and equine pastures location

UL and Our Lady of Lourdes is in talks and have been for some time. The additional land purchase is not Lourdes, yet.

Lourdes really wants to move and scale down its Hospital. Lourdes owns land off of Kaliste Salloom. Talks are to sale/donate(state/federal funds/university) the office buildings, parking towers, hospital, maintenance buildings, and the additional 7 aceres of land. This all butts up to UL's property.

The office buildings have weightrooms, indoor swimming, plenty of office space, parking. The hospital may be sold to someone else for a retirement home, however it would make great dorms with TV's and restrooms in every room and a caffeteria. Nursing and allied health could be taught there also.

This would be a great purchase/donation!! Lourdes and UL have always had a great relationship.

Wow! It would be awesome to have new property that close to campus proper. I hope this works out.

Although we have a terrific athletic complex, it is not on our central campus. I often wondered what it would have been like to have purchased Girard Park from the city and put our athletic complex there. Having a football stadium on campus would bring a whole different atmosphere to our games.

Of course, we have limited space for the campus to grow and need to have the athletic complex where it is along with the Cajundome.

On-campus would have been great; but I don't think there is sufficient space in Girard Park to meet our needs; not to mention parking. I think we have a really nice set-up now, plus room to grow. Now, I'd sure love to have that wonderful shade that Girard Park offers in the Cajun Field tailgaiting area. THAT would be sweet!

It would be cool if that old farm land was made into an Audubon-type park for Lafayette
