Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns is the trademarked nickname of the athletic teams that represent the largest University in the University of Louisiana's System. The campus is located in the heart of Cajun country, Lafayette Louisiana.
There are other references for the school such as UL Lafayette, UL-Lafayette, ULL and as it is most commonly refered to LOUISIANA or its abbreviation UL.
Today Cajun or Cajuns is synonymous with Louisiana but prior to the 1963, the team nickname was the "Bulldogs." Then in 1963 then football coach Russ Faulkinberry changed the nickname of the football team Bulldogs to Raging Cajuns. Soon thereafter, the athletic department, the sports information director Bob Henderson and the student body picked up on the nickname but dropped the "G" and shortened it to Ragin' Cajuns. Today the women's teams are referred to as the the Lady Cajuns of Louisiana.
The Ragin Cajuns of Louisiana compete at the highest level of NCAA athletics. Football, baseball, mens basketball, womens basketball, softball, track, indoor track, cross country, gold and mens and Lady Cajuns tennis.
In 2005 Louisiana ranked second nationally in the Pentathlam and have been in the top-25 for the last three years.
